More Than "Fine" - Anxiety and Mental Health in the Legal Profession

  • Podium 457 - Lincoln Alexander School of Law (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Organized by Beyond the A (http://beyondthea.co). This event will take place at Lincoln Alexander School of Law (Toronto Metropolitan University) - Podium 457, 350 Victoria Street, Toronto, Ontario.

Navigating anxiety and mental health is a challenge when you are faced with the high demands and expectations of law school and the legal profession - exam grades, securing a summer and articling position, billable targets, adversarial counsel and demands on your time from clients, stakeholders, and of course, your family.  When we toss in the additional stigma of talking about anxiety in the legal profession and community, we’re faced with a crisis of students and professionals struggling in silence.

The prevailing advice is to “toughen up”, “stay heads down”, or “fake it until you make it”. But if anything, this has led to some of the highest rates of attrition and burnout in the legal profession.

The status quo doesn’t work anymore. But what if there was another way?  Join our speakers in a safe and authentic space, as they share their own lived experiences of anxiety and mental health through law schools and their careers and how they were able to (for the most part) navigate their careers with their life outside of work.

Audience Takeaways:

  1. Tools on how to navigate through anxiety and mental health in law school and their careers.

  2. A renewed sense of belonging and connection with their peers and individuals in the legal profession.

  3. A sense of understanding that it’s “okay to not always be okay” and a feeling that they are not alone. This way, when something does happen in the future, they can reflect back on this panel and of the lessons learned and resources provided.

Beyond the A: Owning Your Narrative

valentin-salja-5DD-zrySSXc-unsplash (2).jpg

A workshop to provide you with the skills and strategies to own your narrative and shape your future.

About this Event

What if we could create, shape and own our narrative?

When things are going well, it’s easy to dismiss the power of our mind and our own narrative.  But when times are difficult, such as facing an unexpected career transition or dealing with loss or fatigue, it’s easy to start replaying our past narrative as an endless repeat of past disappointments and past stories. How we describe our story to where we are today, helps shape where we will be tomorrow.

Join us for this workshop where we will dive deeper into this topic.

This workshop is open to all legal professionals and non-legal professionals.

Presenters:

Oliver Leung is a member of the Specialty Litigation Group in Fasken’s Vancouver office. Oliver assists clients on a variety of litigation matters with a practice focused on construction and environmental law.

Prior to becoming a lawyer, Oliver worked in different roles in the public service and counselling industry.   He also serves on the board of the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers (BC) as its Vice President (Internal).

Outside of law, Oliver enjoys swimming and reading fiction.

10:00am (PT) | 11:00am (MT) | 1:00pm (ET)

COVID-19 has caused tremendous upheaval for many of us on a personal and professional level. Many are forced into situations where we have to deal with unexpected uncertainty. Sometimes, this means re-evaluating our priorities or coming to a realization with what’s actually going on around us. This leads to difficult conversations with ourselves and the people important to us. It is uncertain. It will cause anxiety.

Our mission at Beyond the A has been, from the beginning, to destigmatize anxiety in the legal profession and to provide you with tools and resources to excel in your career and life.

Join us for a discussion series on navigating change and to connect with others in the profession who are dealing with the very same questions you are facing. We are not purporting to have the perfect solution. But we are here to explore together what this means for each of us. And perhaps you may even pick up some takeaways that you can start implementing in your life right away.

This session, we'll be featuring opening words from Dr. Andrew H. Benjamin, Clinical Professor of Psychology and Affiliate Professor of Law (University of Washington)

See you there!
